Amy has been a clinical therapist for 28 years and has served as a clinical manager and director of the Moody Theological Seminary Counseling Center over the past few years. She started her own private practice in 2007 in Oak Park and Chicago working with individuals ages 12 to 75. Her clinical experience is in working with teenagers, college students, men and women, non-crisis couples, premarital couples, ministry staff, Third Culture Kids. Her expertise with clients include anxiety/panic attacks, depression, eating disorders, anger, self-harm, relationship struggles, church hurt, job loss, sexuality issues, pregnancy, infertility, post-partum depression, menopause and parenting struggles. Amy and her husband, Dr. Kirk Baker, lead premarital courses at a nearby college. For the past 5 years, Amy has enjoyed mentoring and supervising BA psychology interns and masters-level Clinical Mental Health Students.
She has a psychology degree from Taylor University and an MA in counseling from Asbury Theological Seminary. She loves being with her family and friends, watching her two teenage boys play soccer, walking her dog and finding new restaurants and coffee shops in Chicago.
Amy enjoys connecting with individuals of all ages through a relaxed, relational environment, like having coffee with someone who cares. Her approach includes CBT and ACT techniques, through a conversive, person-centered way of tracking and investigating sources of pain. As a client, you will experience laughter and tears, but feel heard and given a voice.

Traumatic experiences are like tangled knots of grief, shame and guilt, silenced needs and emotions, and triggers that can affect present daily living. However, when processed and unraveled, we can develop a life of healing and resilience. My passion is to help adult individuals and couples who have experienced abuse during childhood, PTSD, Complex-PTSD, sexual trauma, grief, relational challenges and life transitions.
As a trauma-informed counselor with more than five years of experience, I incorporate a variety of evidence-based approaches like EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), emotionally focused therapy, Gottman couples therapy, internal family systems, cognitive behavioral therapy and use practical tools. In counseling sessions, I like to really get to know your story so we can collaborate at each step as we navigate your healing journey.
One of my goals is to make every counseling session a place where anyone can feel validated and free to be vulnerable and their authentic selves. It is always an honor and privilege for me to work with clients towards healing and growth. I commend you on your courage to start this process and look forward to working with you!
